In a move that demonstrates exceptional courage, determination, and mission-mindedness, an aspirant for the Bobasi parliamentary seat, Dr. Charles Choti, jetted into the Twin-Cities, Minnesota (USA) to meet and consult with his constituents and friends in the Diaspora. Bobasi Constituency – one of the ten constituencies in the larger Gusii - is found in Gucha District, and is home to a hardworking, enterprising Gusii people. Addressing a well-attended meeting at St. Louis Park Recreation Center in Minnnesota on 15th September, 2007, Dr. Choti affirmed his commitment and resolve to bring Real Change in Bobasi. Positioning himself as a candidate of change, the youthful politician recounted the numerous challenges facing his constituents, leading to stagnancy and unprecedented levels of human misery under the ugly chains of poverty.

The aspirant’s stirring speech drew several standing ovations from his keen and attentive audience. He urged his constituents and friends to join him in ensuring that the electorate understood what is at stake in this year’s presidential, parliamentary, and civic elections. The electorate needs to make a wise and informed electoral decision if meaningful change is to happen. “There is urgent need to break away from the past, change direction, and move forward under a new, visionary leadership that will effectively address the challenges facing our people”, Dr. Choti pleaded. He decried the poor standards of education, the imminent collapse of the tea industry, insecurity, the poor state of roads, environmental degradation, inadequate medical facilities, and water shortages, among others.

Dr. Choti underscored the crucial role played by the constituents in the Diaspora in the socio-economic development of their homeland. He observed that most of them are the bread winners of their families. They not only pay school fees for their siblings but also support several projects back home. He assured them that if elected MP, he will liaise and coordinate with them in realizing sound socio-economic development in the area. “The fact that I traveled all the way from home (Bobasi), across the high seas, to come and consult with you, is enough testimony of the importance I attach to you as major players in developing Bobasi, Gusii, and Kenya as a whole”, declared the articulate former Egerton University don.

Exuding confidence and a high sense of humor, Dr. Choti outlined the progress of his campaign at the grassroots. He was wildly cheered when he asserted that he will be visiting the Twin-Cities, Minnesota, some time next year as the Honorable MP for Bobasi Constituency. In their respective personal responses, the attendees hailed Dr. Choti’s campaign approach and his recently launched campaign manifesto, “Envisioning Leadership for Real Change in Bobasi, 2007”. One Geoffrey Osiemo summed up the sentiments of many when he observed that “Recently I read an excellent Vision on line and when I heard yesterday that its author will be in town today, I decided to attend this meeting, though I am not hailing from Bobasi, just to get to know him. After listening to him, I am totally convinced that Dr. Choti is highly competent and will ably represent his people in parliament as well as offer effective leadership at national level. The task now is to make Bobasi voters to recognize this guy’s rare leadership abilities.” They also talked warmly about his unique background that they said combines well with his oratorical prowess to make Dr. Choti the right person Bobasi needs for an MP now and for the future.
