Ongeri Clashes With Ally Over Top Kanu Post

Cabinet Minister Prof Sam Ongeri has fallen out with a long-time ally following differences over the Kanu national elections.

The minister yesterday described Kisii Kanu branch secretary Sam Nyamweya as a traitor. Prof Ongeri, who heads the branch, said Nyamweya had no mandate to speak on its behalf.

Mr Nyamweya, Prof Ongeri's long-standing ally, has denounced the endorsement of the minister to vie for one of the posts of Kanu national vice chairman in the March 18 delegates conference and instead supported Finance Minister Chris Obure for the post.

Prof Ongeri's candidature was endorsed at a branch executive meeting last week.

"I was elected overwhelmingly by my people and fully endorsed by the branch for the post of vice chairman. Who is Nyamweya to go against the wishes of the people?" asked Prof Ongeri.

He added: "Nyamweya has been masquerading as a political player for a long time and yet has never had any grassroot support. Time has come for this kind of conmanship to be brought to an end."

Prof Ongeri, the Public Health Minister, was speaking during the reopening of the Masimba Health Centre in his constituency, refurbished by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.

Mr Nyamweya has termed a branch executive meeting called today by Prof Ongeri as ill-motivated and aimed at causing division.

He said procedure demanded that notification of such a meeting be issued by the branch secretary.
