Youth Crushed to Death in a Scramble for Cash Handouts
The driver of Finance Minister Chris Obure whose name was only given as Baraza ran over the victim at Kenyoru within Bobasi constituency.
The minister was on his way home after watching a soccer tournament which he sponsored when the accident occurred.
An eye witness told reporters that the deceased, whose name could not be immediately released by police until the next of kin were informed, was allegedly pushed by his colleagues as they fought over the handouts.
The body was removed from the scene and taken to the mortuary.
The minister, who was in his official car registration number GK A344D, a Toyota Land-cruiser, described the incident as unfortunate.
The minister avoided a similar commotion on Friday during the burial of Mr Marita Ondaba, who until his death was a Kisii lawyer.
when youths ganged up and blocked his official car demanding handouts forcing him to change to a Landcruiser belonging to the Gucha DC.
Gucha deputy OCPD, a Mr Chepcheng, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate. He advised youths to shun the culture of demanding handouts from their leaders.
The vehicle is at Ogembo police station awaiting inspection. The minister is also yet to come and record a statement together with his driver over the incident.
