Former Police Officer Killed By Gangsters

Gangsters have killed three people in Kisii, among them a former policeman.

Mr Michele Kwaro, a former regular, was shot dead at Bonyaoro sub-location when he went to rescue neighbour Jackson Mauti, whose home had been attacked.

Two other people, who were not immediately identified, were admitted to the Kisii District Hospital with critical injuries.

The incident occurred near Itierio Secondary School on Sunday at 11.30pm.

Councillor Simeon Bong'o and two others, who did not wish to be named, called on Kisii leaders to call an urgent meeting to discuss insecurity in Gucha, Kisii and Nyamira districts.

They asked why officers at the nearby Gesonso police post and the Suneka camp had failed to respond to distress calls during the attack.

Nyanza police boss David Korir agreed insecurity had increased in the area and pledged to take action. "We will ensure that security is restored," said he, appealing the public to expose criminals.

The attack comes only a week after six armed robbers killed an administration policeman at Manga, Nyamira District.

They reportedly attacked Constable Gekonga Nyamora as he went to the aid of Fr Jeremiah Matogo, the Manga parish priest, who was being robbed.

They robbed him of his gun, Sh200, a mobile phone, a camera and a passport.

Mr Korir said he suspected the robbers were members of a gang operating in the three districts.

Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed on Nyakenimo sub-location, Nyamira, and police patrols have been intensified.

Assistant chief Samuel Rioba said people would not be allowed to outside their homes between 8pm and 6am.

Addressing a meeting at Eramba, Mr Rioba urged residents to help the administration to arrest a certain criminal impersonating the police.
