2002 Elections

Contenders And Agents in Last Minute Consultations

Major hotels in Kisii Town were fully booked yesterday by political party agents ahead of tomorrow's election.

Candidates and their agents met to put final touches to ensure that everything goes as planned.

Mr Simeon Nyachae, the Ford People presidential candidate, hosted scores of his agents to update them on the progress of the party campaign all over the country.

He met at least five campaigners from each sub-location who had been picked by his supporters to root for him when he was away on the campaign trail.

In Nyaribari Masaba, Cabinet minister Sam Ongeri resorted to a house-to-house campaign in a bid to retain his seat on a Kanu ticket.  Prof Ongeri hit the campaign trail as early as 7am and traversed Ichuni location, meeting voters in their homes and joining in the Christmas celebrations.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Town East SDP aspirant Orao Obura asked voters to vote for candidates according to their ability and not parties.

Mr Obura alleged that voters had elected weak MPs due to party euphoria.  Parties are like clothes. It is the one who wears the clothes who matters," he said.

However, he asked his supporters to vote for Narc presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki if they did not want SDP's James Orengo. Other candidates for the seat are Narc's Gor Sungu and Kanu's Peter Hongo.
